Miles City MT was, and sometimes still is - the real Frontier. August 1876 marks the end of thousands of years of wilderness history and the beginning of Wild West history. Miles City MT was at the epicenter of this history and has been immortalized by authors and historic characters alike.
Originally established as a military reservation by Colonel (soon to be General) Nelson A. Miles, Miles Town followed soon to meet the needs of the soldiers. Some rumor that Miles Town was established simply around drinking, gambling, dancing and prostitution. But the real truth of the matter is that it WAS! Nelson Miles was a temperance man and booted the saloon owners out of the fort property. The original Miles Town located 2.5 miles down river was literally built from driftwood around a barrel of booze. The soldiers knew where to find entertainment and soon followed. The Frontier was changing rapidly as US forces drove the Indians into reservation lifestyle. Trapping, Lush Grasslands and Reliable River Transportation made Miles Town more valuable than just booze and entertainment. So called "Reputable" businesses followed and on February 22, 1877 Miles Town site Co. was officially formed. June 24, 1878 marked the creation of Miles City Town site Co. #2 - located just along the newly contracted military reservation boundary at the Tongue River. The modern Miles City MT is based on this 1878 move. The West truly was wild in those days. There was no shortage of entertainment and economic growth had a hay day. The railroad came through in 1881 solidifying Miles City MT as a transportation focal point. The establishment of the exclusive and still active Miles City Club in 1884 created an interesting breeding ground for many historic events. A review of the club's guest registry implies interesting ties between many prominent figures and iconic wild west events including Theodore Roosevelt, The Vigilanties and the Johnson County Wars. On October 16, 1886, Dr. Chester Lebscher - one of the original town designers, enjoyed Miles City's very first electric light at his "Wright Bros. Drug Store". Forever in a strange nexus between Wild Frontier and Modern Technology, Miles City MT remains rustic yet modern. Today, Miles City MT offers visitors and residents alike wild history with rich culture, rustic rural living with all the modern comforts, real live cowboys with sophisticated digital infrastructure. Miles City MT is the perfect tourist destination, the perfect retirement community, the perfect family community, and the perfect business incubator. With highly developed central transportation routes and advance fiber-optic data networks, Miles City MT proceeds strongly into the future. Browse our site, and visit the many links to learn more.
